The Tune Makers – sharing tunes on LiveTrad.com

Image
Cover of Liz Carroll The next LiveTrad.com webcast features The Tune Makers, a newly formed trio, who along with some special guests will tour venues around Ireland this Autumn. The gig takes place on Wednesday September 26th at 8:30pm GMT+1, and will stream free-to-air on the LiveTrad.com website. First, let’s introduce the band. The Tune Makers is made up of Liz Carroll (fiddle), Máirtín O’Connor (accordion) & Dave Flynn (guitar) and for this live streamed concert they’ll be joined on stage by special guest Charlie Lennon. The ensemble came together ‘to showcase the artistry of Irish tune composers’, and what will make this interesting is that the group will combine personal compositions with music from other composers from this era and from bygone ones. An added feature is the addition of a well known musician (local to each venue they’ll play), who will add variety as well as a bit of local colour to the event.

The Chieftans’ founder Paddy Maloney honoured with Mexico’s highest cultural award

Image
Paddy Moloney Joe Lawrence, Irish Independent TRADITIONAL Irish musician Paddy Moloney has been honoured with Mexico's highest cultural award. At a ceremony to mark the tribute, The Chieftains' founder hinted that Hollywood A-lister Liam Neeson is sizing up a new freedom-fighter film role. Moloney said his Oscar-winning friend wants to play the part of a legendary Irish-Mexican army commander who fought US invasions in the 19th century. The musician made the claim as he was honoured with Mexico's Ohtli award at the country's embassy in Dublin for his work promoting the country's culture and historical ties to Ireland. His love of Mexico was sparked in the late-1980s when he discovered Irish involvement in the war against the US.

They are The Specks and they are coming to The Town Hall Theatre this Sunday at 12.30pm. The Speks - Quince, Naymon, Tommo, Pete, Ed and Rafferty - are a trad band for children, whose debut album recently won a prestigious Parents’ Choice music award in the US. In concert they perform nursery rhymes and sing-along songs set to acoustic Irish music while encouraging children to sing and dance along. Newstalk’s Tom Dunne said: “If your little ones love fantastic, magical songs with an Irish twist then The Specks are the boys for you.” The INTO publication In Touch said: “Educationally they encompass the all important areas of rhyme, rhythm and repetition - so frequently the missing links for children learning to read.” The show is for children aged seven and under.
