The concert takes place in the National Concert Hall at 8pm and features an entire programme of Bill Whelan’s music with guest artists including singer Eleanor McEvoy and fiddle player Zoë Conway.

The RTÉ Concert Orchestra with conductor David Brophy will perform a selection of Whelan’s works for orchestra, including the world premiere of the composer’s Symphonic Suite from Riverdance.

The Grammy Award-winning composer’s work Jazzical Cyclebike will be performed by the Crash Ensemble. The work, which was originally written in 2007 for chamber strings with violin and cello duets, was composed in Paris and inspired by many cycling trips around the city. The work was adapted for the Crash Ensemble in a version for piano and string quartet in 2011.

Eleanor McEvoyCover of Eleanor McEvoyJoining composer Whelan and the RTÉ CO under conductor David Brophy will be: fiddle player Zoë Conway, accordionist Máirtín O'Connor, vocalist Eleanor McEvoy, uilleann piper Matt Cassidy, dancers Yolanda Gonzalez Obrado and Mick Donegan, Crash Ensemble and the UCD Choral Scholars.

The concert will include the world premiere of the Symphonic Suite from Riverdance, Caracena from The Seville Suite, The Currach and Evening Céilí from Inishlacken, An Chistin from Carna, Jazzical Cyclebike, Seabird, Flying Blind, Lift the Wings, Shivna and The Heart's Cry.

Whelan said: "The idea for a Riverdance Symphonic Suite has been on my radar for some time.

"Over the years I have often had requests from foreign orchestras for a full-length concert piece containing the music from the show.

"As my original score incorporated traditional instruments, it was not always easy to assemble the various ethnic elements for a concert in say, Japan.

Bill Whelan and guests

A conductor's score and batonsImage via WikipediaBill Whelan and guests - The Irish Times - Wed, Sep 01, 2010: "Some will recall that Ireland took the 1994 Eurovision prize with Rock’n’Roll Kids, but the de facto winner of that particular song contest was surely a dance. Nor, 16 years later, would luck seem to be running out for Riverdance, that luckiest of Bill Whelan’s inspirations. The smash-hit show it spawned has now been playing to worldwide audiences for longer than did the most prominent of Eurovision victors, Abba.
Whelan must be one of the few people in the wordy world of popular music ever to have had a big say purely in the language of notes. He describes his secret simply as “taking trad music, working it in with the orchestra, and giving it a new twist”.
The Seville Suiteand Riverdancehave sounded subtler than they did in Friday’s muscular performances by the RT Concert Orchestra under principal conductor David Brophy. Amplification funnelled the timbres, and spelled danger for the solo string tuning."
