June 3, Sun: New York: New York City, Joe’s Pub, www.joespub.com.
THE TEETOTALLERS — an unprecedented new project by three of the best and busiest Irish musicians, Martin Hayes, Kevin Crawford, and John Doyle — make their first US tour this spring, ten East Coast dates winding up at Joe’s Pub in New York on Sunday, June 3rd.
“Irish music fans should be particularly excited about The Teetotalers mini-supergroup, since all three are great collaborative players,” says The Huffington Post.
The group combines fiddler Martin Hayes, Ireland’s Traditional Musician of the Year for 2008 (TG4 Gradam Ceoil awards); flute player Kevin Crawford, a member of acclaimed band Lúnasa; and singer and guitarist John Doyle, a founding member of Solas, recent Joan Baez bandleader, and a Grammy award nominee for 2009. Together they represent a breathtaking summit of talent, skill, and imagination.
Hayes, Crawford, and Doyle first performed together essentially on a whim at the 2010 Sebastopol Celtic Festival in California. The three were “tossed together” by the promoter, Hayes told the Huffington Post’s Marty Lipp, and “we had a great time.” The idea of touring came up and the three looked at each other, he recounted, and asked themselves why not?
Out of that informal, inspired encounter emerged the formidable new trio, which has performed in Ireland to early acclaim. The Teetotallers potent brand of Irish traditional music is meant to be drunk deeply and repeatedly. Expect the extraordinary.
